Injury and Illness
Pfizer strives for workplace health and safety. Injury reductions reflect continuous improvements through the years. We have placed significant focus on building and reinforcing colleague awareness and participation in safety efforts. Upgrading workplace safety, one of our most important missions, is strongly supported by senior management.
Commitments:
- Deploying the right EHS professionals at the facility level
- Integrating safety into day-to-day operations
- Developing a "safety first" culture
Overall, Pfizer has a solid health record and good safety performance. However, there's room for improvement with respect to our lost-time and total injury and illness rates.
The lost-time injury case rate per 100 employees at legacy Wyeth sites was among the lowest in the pharmaceutical sector and had decreased steadily over the last seven years. At Pfizer, ergonomic injuries continue to be the leading injury type in manufacturing and R&D, with slip/trips/falls as No. 2.
Late in 2007, we began significant progress in collecting additional metrics to identify areas to improve safety and to spot priorities. In early 2008, we set aggressive internal goals and targets and have begun seeing improved performance.
We are dedicated to:
- Significantly improving health and safety performance
- Maintaining effective management of inherently high-risk operations
- Ensuring the health and wellness of colleagues by carefully managing workplace exposure
Notable actions to improve safety:
- A dedicated focus on ergonomics that shows great success. The Ergonomic Mentor Program, launched in 2008, establishes an ongoing partnership between site colleagues and team members to address challenges and expand expertise across more sites. The mentor provides training, supports the use of risk assessment tools and offers real-time solutions to ergonomic challenges.
- Increasing awareness of the causes and prevention of slips, trips and falls.
- Applying scientific risk assessment technologies to chemicals and biologicals in the workplace to ensure the highest level of colleague safety at every stage of development from discovery and manufacture to use and disposal.

Wyeth Nutritionals in Singapore launched the Safety Idol program in July 2004. Under this program, members of the plant EHS Committee awarded monthly "Spot Safety Awards" to employees who exhibited safe behavior above and beyond their normal job requirements. At the end of the year, plant employees voted for their choice of Safety Idol from among the "Spot Safety Award" winners that year. In 2008, the Singapore facility earned its second Gold Safety Performance Award from the Singapore Ministry of Manpower.
