Key Performance Indicators
![]()
We turn environment, health and safety (EHS) challenges into opportunities to improve performance. Recognizing that well-defined expectations drive continuous improvement, we use EHS performance targets, or key performance indicators (KPI), throughout every level of the organization. EHS performance is an integral part of our business and strategic planning.
Measuring and Monitoring
Careful measuring and monitoring is vital to improve performance. We do this through a combination of data collection and verification, internal audits, facility self-assessment and management system reviews. We can spotlight successes and identify program areas where we need to focus on improvement.

Accuracy, transparency and usability determine how best to report our environment, health and safety performance. Information related to indicators, goals and targets, performance and status have been compiled into a KPI dashboard. EHS performance is among areas highlighted.
In aligning with overall Corporate Responsibility reporting, EHS programs and performance measures are considered in the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. The comprehensive GRI index may be found at www.pfizer.com/responsibility/cr_report/gri.jsp
Pfizer participates in the Global Reporting Initiative, using third generation (G3) guidelines to submit sustainability reports. We are among more than 1,500 organizations from 60 countries that support this independent ecological footprint reporting. For information, please see www.globalreporting.org
Environmental data is baseline-adjusted in accordance with the World Resources Institute Protocol for Reporting greenhouse gases. Facility closures are included in the data set while divested units are not.
Injury and illness data does not follow WRI — it is rate-based and therefore not baseline-adjusted. The data scope is directed by our EHS Standards and guidelines. With the exception of some of our offices, the global population of sites includes legacy Pfizer manufacturing, R&D, commercial and logistics centers. EHS performance data does not include legacy Wyeth or our supply chain/outsourced manufacturing operations. Currently, performance measures and indicators are based on legacy Pfizer facilities through 2008. Going forward, metrics will be provided to include roll-ups for both legacy Pfizer and legacy Wyeth.
Pfizer measures, monitors, evaluates and graphically reports on several EHS performance metrics selected to provide a meaningful picture of how our operations affect the natural and workplace environment and the communities where we are located. We work actively to better understand our extended product and operational footprint so we can identify areas that we have the best opportunity to influence.
